For a few years around 1970, a young woman from Togo was one of the most admired voices in French-speaking Africa. Bella Bellow sang in Ewe and French with warmth and grace, performing in Lomé, Abidjan, Dakar and Paris. Then, in December 1973, she was killed in a car accident. She was 28. Togo lost its first international music star, and her songs became treasured memories.
Early life and Rockia
Georgette Adjoavi Bellow was born in 1945 in Togo. She showed a talent for singing as a child and performed at school and church events. She began her professional career in the 1960s, performing on radio and at concerts in Lomé. Her talent took her to festivals and concert halls across Africa and in France. She represented Togo at international cultural events.

Bella Bellow blended traditional Togolese rhythms, especially from Ewe music, with modern arrangements influenced by jazz, soul and Congolese styles. Among her best-known songs is Rockia, which remains popular in Togo and among fans of 1970s African music.
Paris, death and remembrance
She recorded in Paris with leading African musicians of the time, including Manu Dibango, who arranged some of her work. In Togo, she became a cultural icon, a symbol of national pride and of African womanhood on the world stage. She died in a road accident in December 1973. Her death shocked Togo and the wider region.
Togo has honoured her memory in many ways, with tributes on radio and television and commemorations on anniversaries of her death. Later Togolese and West African singers, including women who followed her into music, cite her as an inspiration.
Rediscovery and Ewe songs
Collectors and reissues have helped new listeners discover her recordings. Many of her songs drew on Ewe melodies and proverbs from southern Togo, and she sang them with a clarity that made them accessible to listeners who did not speak the language. That mix of local roots and modern polish was central to her appeal.
In the early 1970s, few African women had international careers in popular music, which made her success all the more significant. Bella Bellow had only a few years in the spotlight. In Togo, her voice still plays on the radio, and she is still the singer many people name first.
