At Ghanaian weddings and funerals, when the DJ plays a long, smooth medley of Fante highlife, older guests smile and head for the floor. Often it is C.K. Mann.
Charles Kofi Amankwaa Mann was born in Cape Coast in 1936 and spent much of his career in Sekondi-Takoradi, the port city in the Western Region. He began playing guitar with local bands and became one of the leading figures of Fante highlife, the style rooted in the coastal Fante communities of the Central and Western Regions.
The sound
C.K. Mann’s music is smooth and flowing, with guitar lines that roll like waves, gentle vocals and a steady, danceable rhythm. He drew on osode, a Fante folk rhythm, and on older palm wine and highlife traditions. His songs were sung in Fante.
Carousel 7
In the late 1960s and 1970s, Mann led bands including the Carousel 7. The group recorded popular albums, and his extended medleys, which strung songs together into long danceable tracks, became his signature.
Hits
His best-known songs include “Edina Benya”, about the Benya lagoon in Elmina, and many medleys that remain staples of highlife parties. His music became especially popular at weddings, funerals and outdoor gatherings along the coast.
Fante and the sea
The Fante coast, from Cape Coast and Elmina to Takoradi, is a world of fishing canoes, Asafo companies, lagoons and old forts. Fante highlife grew in that setting, and its lyrics often mention the sea, fishing, love and the towns along the shore.
Revival
In the 2000s and 2010s, reissue labels in Europe re-released classic Ghanaian highlife recordings, introducing C.K. Mann’s music to new audiences abroad. Younger Ghanaian musicians sampled or covered his songs.
Recognition
Mann received honours for his contribution to Ghanaian music, and fellow musicians regarded him as a master of the guitar and of Fante musical tradition.
Death
C.K. Mann died in Takoradi in January 2018, aged 81. Tributes came from across the music industry.
Listening
Look for his medleys and the album Party Time with Ceekay. Play them at a gathering and watch who gets up to dance first.
Fante highlife today
Fante highlife remains popular along Ghana’s coast, and C.K. Mann’s recordings are part of the soundtrack of Cape Coast and Takoradi life.
The Benya lagoon still flows into the sea at Elmina. Somewhere nearby, on any Saturday, someone is playing C.K. Mann.
