Colombian Senate Gets Its First Adult Film Star Senator
Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, popularly known as Amaranta Hank, has been sworn in as a Colombian senator following her election in the country's March parliamentary polls. The 25-year-old former adult film actress is the first adult industry star to hold public office in Colombia.
Background
Omaña will represent the Norte de Santander region in the Senate as a member of the left-wing Historic Pact coalition during the 2026–2030 legislative term. She secured the seat after being placed 23rd on the coalition's closed electoral list. The Historic Pact emerged as the strongest political force in the Senate election, receiving more than 4.4 million votes, representing 22.72 per cent of the total votes cast. The coalition secured 25 seats in the upper legislative chamber.
Omaña worked as a journalist before entering the adult entertainment industry. This transition is not uncommon in Colombia, where the entertainment industry is a significant contributor to the country's economy.
What This Means
Responding to criticism of her election in a TikTok video, Omaña asked: “Why can’t a woman who was in the adult industry aspire to a popularly elected office?” She has advocated stronger legal recognition and protection for adult entertainment workers, arguing that women involved in the sexual economy contribute to Colombia's economy and should not face discrimination because of their work or personal history.
What Happens Next
The newly sworn-in senator said her legislative priorities would extend beyond protecting adult entertainment workers to include mental health and the prevention of sexual abuse. Before her election, Omaña and fellow former adult performer Juan Carlos Florián received controversial appointments as deputy ministers in Colombia's Ministry of Equality under President Gustavo Petro's administration. Omaña's election marks a significant shift in public perception, as she aims to prove that her past career does not dictate her ability to hold public office.
