DJ Cuppy reveals she's been avoiding marriage despite getting proposals every day

DJ Cuppy says she receives marriage proposals every day, including from people outside her fanbase. The Nigerian disc jockey and entrepreneur, known as Florence Otedola, has found a unique way to dodge the pressure to settle down – by flaunting her growing list of academic qualifications.

DJ Cuppy's Academic Dodge

According to an interview with Marie Claire, Cuppy revealed that she uses her degrees from New York University, the University of Oxford, and King's College London to avoid questions about marriage, particularly from her grandmother. "I call it avoidance of marriage," she said. "Every time my grandma asks, 'Where's your husband?', I show her a new certificate."

Cuppy explained that her constantly growing list of academic qualifications has become a convenient excuse to dodge marriage proposals. "I get marriage proposals every day," she said. "And I'm not even talking about fans. Everyone is apparently trying to help me when I have not asked to be helped." She also mentioned that her growing academic profile isn't just a dodge, though – it's also a means to gain a deeper understanding of the industries she works in.

Cuppy's Philanthropic Work and Family

In the same interview, Cuppy spoke about her philanthropic work and a moment that made her feel her public profile had come full circle. She recalled her father, billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, being stopped at an airport by someone who recognised him only as "Cuppy's dad." "It made me feel good because normally, I'm Femi's daughter, but on that day, to that person, he was my dad," she said.

Cuppy also drew a distinction between charity and philanthropy. "Charity is just giving because you want to," she said. "Being a philanthropist, though, is about making a lasting difference. It's about long-lasting results." She emphasized the importance of making a lasting impact in her philanthropic work.

For Now, Marriage Remains on Hold

For now, Cuppy seems content to let her next degree answer the question of marriage for her. With her constantly growing list of academic qualifications, it's likely that she'll continue to use them as a convenient excuse to dodge marriage proposals. As Cuppy continues to pursue her education and philanthropic work, it remains to be seen when – or if – she'll consider settling down.
