DJ Timi has released 'Trip To Wales, Vol. 1', a four-track extended play that brings together Afrobeats, Amapiano, and Afrohouse sounds. The project features collaborations with artists based in Wales and Nigerian artists based in the European country.
New Sounds from Wales
DJ Timi's EP was co-produced by Abuja-based producers Sickxonds and KG, who also mixed and mastered the project. The EP includes four tracks: "Croeso," "Run," "Mamacita," and "Fun." DJ Timi aimed to create a project that would bring different musical backgrounds together in the same space.
"Croeso" sets the tone for the EP, with DJ Timi welcoming listeners to his world. The track features Culz Wave and samples Ramz's "Barking." This blend of sounds gives the listener a sense of where DJ Timi has come from and where he is now.
Experimenting with New Sounds
The second track, "Run," is a hype track driven by repetition and catchy phrases. Nigerian hype staples like "ololololo" and "can you feel itttt, yebooo" give the song verve. DJ Timi wanted the track to be "cool and easy to sing and vibe to," and that intention comes through.
DJ Timi collaborated with Lucy Borja on the track, and her presence fits into what he wanted from the project: for Welsh-based artists to step outside their comfort zones and experiment with new sounds. The EP also features Nigerian artists based in Wales, such as Nelly Nonso and Big Clint.
Bringing Different Sounds Together
The final track, "Fun," features Anwar Siziba, Seraphyre, and Culz Wave. DJ Timi calls it the summer track of the EP, and its intentions are clear from the chorus: "I just wanna have fun tonight." The project gives listeners a clear idea of where DJ Timi is, what he sounds like, and what he wants to explore next.
DJ Timi's move to Wales came through his education. He studied Building Technology at Covenant University and later enrolled in an MSc in Construction Project Management at the University of South Wales. He has since performed at the O2 Indigo Arena in London and the Swansea Arena in front of about 2,000 people.
A Sonic Exploration of Wales
DJ Timi's project is not only about documenting his own move to Wales but also about testing what can happen when the music he knows meets the people and sounds around him. He plans to release more singles, collaborate with international artists, and eventually establish a DJ academy in Wales.
