Bella Okagbue’s legal team has fired back at a cease-and-desist notice from her ex-boyfriend Segun Olusemo, known as Sheggz, and is now threatening to sue him over a broken promise to marry and alleged domestic abuse.
The former Big Brother Naija housemate’s lawyers accused Sheggz of making repeated marriage promises publicly and privately, then reneging on them. They also alleged that Sheggz subjected Bella to physical and emotional harm during their relationship.
The dispute stems from the couple’s breakup in January 2026, after four years together. Sheggz announced the split on August 19, 2026, citing unresolved issues around trust and respect. He denied cheating and denied abusing Bella. He said he had bought an engagement ring because he believed in their future.
The legal response
Bella’s lawyers issued their response after Sheggz’s team demanded she retract statements they called defamatory and issue an apology. Her lawyers rejected that demand as spurious and baseless.
In the response, the legal team claimed Sheggz had promised to marry Bella through Live On-Air broadcasts, social media, in front of family members and mutual friends, and in private. They said the promises started when the pair met during the 2022 edition of BBNaija and continued until 2026.
“Our client informed us that you have made promises to marry her via platforms such as Live On-Air, various Social Media entities, in the presence of Family Members & Common Friends and in private; however, your motives were entirely premised on deceits and intents marred with fraudulent misrepresentations to induce financial benefits,” the response read.
“According to our client, this pattern began at the commencement of your acquaintance during a popular Reality TV Show in 2022 and continued up until 2026.
“We were reliably informed by our client that you both cohabited in the United Kingdom, a time in which she invested and committed to the union.”
The lawyers argued that the broken promise caused Bella stigma, reputational damage, emotional distress and psychological harm. They cited the Supreme Court decision in Ezeanah v. Atta (2004) 7 NWLR (Pt. 873) 468 and said the circumstances gave Bella grounds to pursue remedies under Nigerian law.
Abuse allegations
Bella’s legal team also accused Sheggz of domestic abuse. They said he restricted her movement and subjected her to repeated physical and emotional harm.
The lawyers demanded that Sheggz stop all unwanted contact with Bella, including unsolicited calls and messages that could be perceived as threatening or intimidating.
They added that Bella was prepared to petition the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency and institute civil proceedings over the alleged abuse, injuries and other damages.
The response also repeated an earlier claim that Sheggz obtained several loans from Bella under false pretences. Her lawyers said they had evidence to support the claim but did not specify the total value of the alleged loans.
The SheLLa years
Bella and Sheggz met as housemates during BBNaija’s 2022 “Level Up” season. Their romance became one of the most talked-about storylines of the show and earned them the nickname “SheLLa” among fans.
After leaving the house, they continued their relationship publicly and became one of the franchise’s most prominent celebrity couples. They frequently discussed their plans for the future and their intention to build a life together. Marriage was a recurring subject in their public conversations.
Sheggz said on August 19 that the relationship had ended in January. He denied cheating and denied abusing Bella, and said he had made serious plans to marry her, including buying an engagement ring.
Bella has not publicly commented on the legal response.
