K1 De Ultimate

Fuji music has many stars, but for decades its throne has belonged to one man. Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as K1 De Ultimate, has been at the top of the genre since the 1980s. In 1993 he was crowned king of fuji at a ceremony at NTA Ibadan, and he has rarely given up the title since.

Isale Eko

K1 was born on 3 March 1957 in Isale Eko, the old heart of Lagos Island, though his family roots are in Ijebu-Ode. He grew up surrounded by the Muslim music traditions of Lagos, including were, the songs sung to wake the faithful during Ramadan, from which fuji developed.

Barrister’s student

Fuji was created by Sikiru Ayinde Barrister in the 1960s and 1970s. Wasiu Ayinde Marshal worked under Barrister as a young man and developed his own version of Barrister’s Talazo Fuji. He is often described as Barrister’s most successful successor.

Breakthrough

In the 1980s, Wasiu Ayinde released a string of albums that made him a star. His voice, his witty praise singing and his ability to read a crowd made him the most sought-after performer at Lagos parties.

The king’s titles

Fuji fans love titles. Wasiu Ayinde has collected many: Kwam 1, K1 De Ultimate, Mr Fuji, Oluaye. In January 2020, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, installed him as Mayegun of Yorubaland, a traditional title that recognised his cultural influence.

The albums

His catalogue includes dozens of albums, among them Talaso, Ile Kun Ayo, Let the Music Flow and Oluaye in Berlin. He mixed fuji with other influences, including jazz, hip-hop and Afrobeats, to keep the music current.

Owambe king

K1 is the ultimate owambe performer. At Nigerian society weddings and parties, his band plays for hours while he praises guests by name and celebrants spray money. Booking him signals status.

A book

In 2025, the writer Jide Taiwo published K1 De Ultimate: A Legacy Secured, a book tracing his four-decade career.

Fuji and Islam

Fuji grew out of were and ajisari music, performed by young Muslims who went from house to house during Ramadan to wake people for the pre-dawn meal. Over time, musicians added more drums, praise singing and, later, keyboards and guitars. The genre kept strong links with Lagos’s Muslim communities even as it became popular with Nigerians of all faiths. K1’s career reflects that history. He grew up in an Isale Eko neighbourhood where these traditions were part of daily life, and his music still draws on the call-and-response and praise traditions of its origins.

Many fuji musicians have come and gone. K1 De Ultimate has outlasted rivals, changing tastes and the rise of Afrobeats, and he still holds the crown he was given in 1993.
