Congolese music is famous for guitars built for dancing. Lokua Kanza took a different path. His songs are soft, acoustic and intimate, often sung in several languages, and they have won him fans who might never step onto a rumba dance floor.

Early life

Pascal Lokua Kanza was born on 21 April 1958. He is a singer, songwriter, arranger, producer and multi-instrumentalist, and he has also become known as a philanthropist and television personality.

Les Redoutables

Kanza began his career in 1977 as a guitarist in Abeti Masikini’s band Les Redoutables, one of the notable groups in Kinshasa at the time. He later moved to Côte d’Ivoire, where he worked with Best Orchestra.

Paris

In 1984 he relocated to Paris, then a centre for African musicians. Through the late 1980s, he performed and sang with Ray Lema, contributing to Lema’s albums Bwana Zoulou Gang in 1987 and Nangadeef in 1989. In 1988 he worked with French artists including Charlélie Couture, Jacques Higelin and Alain Bashung.

The debut

His self-titled debut solo album, Lokua Kanza, released in 1992, made him a star and won Best African Album at the African Music Awards.

Wapi Yo

His second album, Wapi Yo, released in 1995, brought his greatest commercial success. Its lead single, “Shadow Dancer”, charted in several European countries.

More albums

He followed with Lokua Kanza 3 in 1998, Toyebi Té in 2002, Toto Bona Lokua in 2004, Plus Vivant in 2005, Nkolo in 2010, Bondeko in 2017 and Moko in 2021.

His sound

Kanza’s music is known for its soulful, folksy feel, which is unusual in a tradition dominated by dance-floor rumba. He uses rich vocal harmonies, acoustic guitar and gentle percussion, and often layers his own voice to create a choir.

The Voice Afrique Francophone

From 2016 to 2017, he served as a coach on The Voice Afrique Francophone, the television singing competition, introducing him to a younger audience across French-speaking Africa.

Collaborations

Across his career he has worked with musicians from Africa, Europe and beyond, crossing styles and languages with ease, and he is often invited to arrange and produce for other artists.

Quiet strength

In a music culture where volume and speed often win, Lokua Kanza proved that a quiet voice can travel far. His success shows that there is more than one way to make Congolese music.
