Mary J. Blige Opens Up About Being Childfree: 'I've Always Known What I Wanted
Mary J. Blige Reflects on Being Childfree
American singer, songwriter, and actress Mary J. Blige has opened up about her decision to remain childfree. In a recent interview on the IMO Podcast, the Grammy-winning singer discussed music, healing, and her journey to becoming herself.
Blige explained that she once decided not to have children after watching family members and other mothers struggle with childcare and lose some of their freedom. She recalled seeing her family members needing babysitters and having no choice, no freedom. "I saw a lot of people struggling," she said.
Changing Perspective on Motherhood
Blige's perspective on motherhood has changed with age. When she was younger, she didn't want children, but as she got older, she started to see the value parents place on their teenage children. "When you are younger, those are the choices you make- I don't want any kids but when you get older, you start to see how valuable parents' teenagers are to them," she said.
Dealing with Loneliness
Despite being childfree, Blige admitted that she sometimes feels lonely. However, she enjoys her own company and finds ways to keep herself entertained. "Sometimes, I'm lonely like I'm alone in my home a lot but I have a good time," she said. "I love listening to music, laughing on my own and trying on clothes. It is what it is."
Healing from Past Abuse
Blige also spoke about healing from past abuse and how the experience strengthened her. She said that while it still hurts sometimes, it's a blessing in that lesson. "We are here. We've forgiven and moved past but it still hurts sometimes but it's a blessing in that lesson. It strengthened me," she said.
A Life Without Children
Blige's decision to remain childfree was influenced by her observations of family members and other mothers struggling with childcare. She didn't want to experience the same lack of freedom that they did. "I saw a lot of people struggling. My family members, they needed babysitters. I saw them having no choice, no freedom," she said.
A Stepmother and a Role Model
Blige was previously married to music manager and producer Martin Isaacs. The couple got married in 2003 and remained together for years before their divorce was finalized in June 2018. Although they didn't have children together, Blige was a stepmother to Isaacs' three children from previous relationships. She previously spoke about embracing her role as a stepmother.
A Choice for Freedom
In 2022, Blige had spoken publicly about choosing freedom over motherhood. She enjoyed being able to move through life without having to constantly care for another person. "I enjoyed being able to move through life without having to constantly care for another person," she said.
Mary J. Blige's decision to remain childfree is a personal choice that she has made for herself. While it may not be the right choice for everyone, it's clear that she has thought deeply about her decision and is comfortable with her choice. As she continues to navigate her life and career, it will be interesting to see how her perspective on motherhood and family continues to evolve.
