Why I always play witches and wicked women — Patience Ozokwor explains her Nollywood roles

Patience Ozokwor, Nigeria's veteran actress popularly known as Mama G, has been playing witches, wicked mothers-in-law, and villains in Nollywood films for decades. In a recent livestreamed interview with content creator Carter Efe, she revealed why she has stuck to these roles, attributing it to a divine assignment.

A Niche Divinely Assigned

Ozokwor believes God gave her the niche of playing villains in Nollywood, which has been a significant part of her career spanning over three decades. She explained that her portrayal of villains is intentional, designed to show audiences the consequences of living badly. "If you are taking part in any of them, you have to be careful and know the end thereof, for the end justifies the means," she said.

Teaching Moral Lessons through Entertainment

According to Ozokwor, her performances are meant to function almost like a moral warning embedded in entertainment, using exaggerated wickedness on screen to make audiences reflect on real consequences off screen. She added that her goal is to show viewers the consequences of living a terrible life and the benefits of being a good person. Her portrayals of stern mothers-in-law, witches, and scheming antagonists have become so convincing over the years that they often overshadowed public perception of her as a person.

A Career Spanning Over Three Decades

Ozokwor rose to fame in the 1990s and has since become one of Nollywood's most recognizable veteran performers. Her intimidating, larger-than-life characters have become iconic in the industry, with many viewers growing up associating them directly with her on-screen persona. Despite being typecast in villainous roles, Ozokwor's performances have been widely praised for their impact and memorability.

A Mix of Nostalgia and Amusement on Social Media

The clip from her conversation with Carter Efe quickly circulated across social media platforms, drawing a mix of nostalgic and amused reactions from fans who grew up watching her films. Many credited her performances as some of the most memorable villain roles in Nollywood's history, with some fans expressing their admiration for her craft and dedication to her roles.
