Souad Massi in concert

A woman with an acoustic guitar, singing in Algerian Arabic, French and sometimes Berber, with a voice that is clear and quietly intense. That is the sound of Souad Massi, one of North Africa’s most admired singer-songwriters. Her songs draw on Algerian chaabi, folk, flamenco and rock, and they often speak of love, exile and memory. Since the early 2000s, she has performed on stages across Europe and beyond, becoming a voice for Algerians at home and abroad.

Early life and the move to Paris

Souad Massi was born in Algiers in 1972 and grew up in the Bab El Oued neighbourhood. She discovered music through her family and began playing guitar young. In her early career, she sang with a rock band in Algeria. Her outspoken style attracted attention during a dangerous period in the country. The 1990s in Algeria were marked by violence, and artists faced threats. Massi faced pressure and received threats for her music.

In 1999 she performed at a festival in Paris and was offered a record deal. She settled in France.

Raoui, languages and themes

Her debut international album, Raoui, released in 2001, was widely praised. Its acoustic songs and emotional lyrics won her many fans. Massi sings mainly in Algerian Arabic, but also in French and English, reflecting her life between cultures. She has cited influences ranging from Algerian chaabi to Western folk and rock singers. She released several more albums, exploring different styles, including collaborations with other musicians.

Her work has earned awards in France, including recognition at the Victoires de la Musique. Her songs often deal with homesickness, freedom and the experience of women, themes that resonate with many listeners.

Live shows and Bab El Oued

She is known for intimate concerts where she performs with a small band or alone with her guitar. Massi’s music connects North African traditions with international audiences. The neighbourhood where she grew up is one of Algiers’ oldest and most crowded districts, known for its music, football and strong community. Its sounds and stories appear in her songs.

Souad Massi left Algiers with a guitar during the worst years of the conflict. Her songs still sound like letters home, written by someone who never stopped thinking about the place she left.
