Lagos Hosts Pioneers: STEM Africa Fest 2026 Draws Young Innovators
Over 3,800 children, parents, educators, and STEM enthusiasts converged on Lagos on 18 July 2026 for the STEM Africa Fest 2026, a festival that has grown into one of Africa's leading experiential STEM learning platforms.
Interactive Workshops Foster Innovation
The event, established in 2021, featured interactive workshops spanning science, engineering, coding, and AI. These hands-on learning experiences included drone technology, chess, mental math, and traditional Adire design. The workshops connected youth with industry mentorship for future STEM careers, with the aim of fostering early, hands-on critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The festival has grown significantly since its launch, with over 20,000 children, parents, educators, and industry professionals participating across Africa. This year's event brought together a diverse group of individuals, all united by a shared goal: to provide children with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
Science Learning Labs and Coding Bootcamp
The Science Learning Labs provided a unique opportunity for children to carry out practical experiments, observing chemical reactions firsthand and discovering that science is often best understood by doing. The Coding Bootcamp introduced participants to the foundation classes of websites, mobile applications, and software development, opening their minds to programming concepts for beginners.
These interactive sessions were just a few of the many activities that took place during the festival. The AI Masterclass, for example, allowed participants to use artificial intelligence to evaluate stories, demonstrating that innovation is driven by imagination as much as technical ability.
Innovation Through Imagination and Technology
The Drone Technology Experience provided a fascinating look at how drones are used across industries such as agriculture, healthcare, logistics, and environmental monitoring. Participants were encouraged to consider how similar technologies could solve challenges within their own communities.
The Abacus Mental Mathematics and Adire Creative Workshop also provided engaging and interactive ways for children to develop their skills. The Maltina STEM Trivia, meanwhile, put scientific knowledge to the test in an energetic quiz session that encouraged teamwork, confidence, and a healthy spirit of competition.
