Thandiswa Mazwai performing live

Thandiswa Mazwai’s voice has been part of South African music for three decades, first as the front woman of one of the country’s most popular groups and then as a solo artist whose albums blend politics, spirituality and a powerful African sound. Fans call her King Tha.

Early life

Thandiswa Nyameka Mazwai was born on 31 March 1976. She grew up during the final years of apartheid, and the politics of that era shaped her belief that music could say important things.

Bongo Maffin

She rose to fame as the lead vocalist and songwriter of Bongo Maffin, a group that mixed kwaito, reggae, jazz and African sounds. The band was hugely popular in post-apartheid South Africa.

King Tha

Her nickname, King Tha, reflects her commanding presence on stage and her standing in South African music.

Zabalaza

Her solo debut, Zabalaza, released in 2004, went double platinum. Its title means struggle, and the album drew on South Africa’s history and her own experiences. It was nominated for the Planet Awards on BBC Radio 3.

Recognition

In 2004 she won Best Female Artist at the Metro FM Music Awards, confirming her place as a solo star.

Ibokwe

Her second solo album, Ibokwe, released in 2009, explored African spirituality. It reached gold status within weeks of release and received wide critical praise.

Her sound

Thandiswa’s music blends traditional South African styles, jazz, Afro-pop and rock, sung mostly in isiXhosa. Her voice is strong and expressive, capable of both fierce protest and gentle reflection.

A voice for change

She is known for speaking about social justice, African identity and the legacy of apartheid, both in her lyrics and in public.

On stage

Her concerts are known for their energy and theatre, drawing on traditional dress and dance as well as a full band.

Language and roots

Singing mainly in isiXhosa, Thandiswa draws on traditional praise poetry, chants and rhythms. Her work is often described as a bridge between the sounds of rural South Africa and the energy of the city.

Influence

Younger South African artists often name her as an influence, particularly women who want to combine pop success with political and cultural messages.

A crown kept

Many stars fade after a group splits. Thandiswa Mazwai grew stronger alone, and decades after Bongo Maffin’s first hits, the title King Tha still fits.
