The military stands as one of the most relevant institutions in the world, serving as a foundation for security and stability at the global, regional, and national levels.

A recent index by Global Firepower’s shows the military strength of some countries globally. The index ranks 145 nations’ militaries, weighing various factors like the volume of sophistication of its equipment, finances, geography, and resources.

In an earlier report on military ranking in Africa, we noted that while the GFP can give us a good idea of the African countries with the strongest military power, it’s key to know that a country’s military scene can be shaped by alliances, diplomatic ties, and tech advancements.

According to the index, Egypt is ranked the most powerful military force in Africa and 15th globally. Algeria and South Africa follow closely in second and third positions, securing the 26th and 33rd positions globally.

1. Egypt

Egypt boasts the strongest military in Africa, ranking 15th globally. With a vast array of modern weaponry, a sizeable active personnel of 485,000, and a sizable budget allocated to defense, Egypt’s military is a force to be reckoned with.

2. Algeria

Algeria follows closely behind, ranking 26th globally. Its military is well-equipped, with a focus on air defense and armored vehicles. Algeria also has a significant active military personnel of 130,000.

3. South Africa

South Africa holds the 3rd spot in Africa and 33th globally. Its military is well-balanced, with a good mix of air, land, and naval capabilities. South Africa also has a strong defense industry, producing some of its own military equipment.

4. Nigeria

Nigeria occupies the 4th position in Africa and 39th globally. Its military is the largest in Africa by personnel strength, with over 175,000 active troops. However, its equipment is outdated, and its budget is constrained.

5. Ethiopia

Ethiopia ranks 5th in Africa and 49th globally. Its military has seen extensive combat experience in recent years, which has made it a formidable force. Ethiopia also has a large active military personnel of 145,000.

6. Angola

 Angola comes in at 6th in Africa and 55th globally. Its military is well-equipped, with a focus on armored vehicles and artillery. Angola also has a significant number of Soviet-era military equipment.

7. Morocco:

Morocco holds the 7th spot in Africa and 61th globally. Its military is well-trained and well-equipped, with a focus on counter-terrorism and border security. Morocco also has a close military relationship with the United States.

8. Democratic Republic of Congo

Congo ranks 8th in Africa and 73th globally. Its military is relatively small but well-trained and well-equipped. Congo also has a strong counter-terrorism capability.

9. Tunisia

Sudan occupies the 9th position in Africa and 74th globally. Its military is large but poorly equipped. However, Tunisia has a significant amount of experience in combat.

10. Sudan

Uganda rounds out the top 10 in Africa and 76th globally. Its military is small but well-trained and has seen extensive combat experience. Sudan also has a close military relationship with the United States.
