Biography
Azawi is Priscilla Zawedde, a Ugandan singer, songwriter and dancer born in Kampala on 2 February 1996. She sings Afrobeats in Luganda and English, and holds a commerce degree from Makerere University.
She began as a child dancer with the Kika troupe and Crane Performers, touring China twice. She then turned to songwriting, writing for Eddy Kenzo, Vinka, Lydia Jazmine and Nina Rose. In 2019 she walked into Swangz Avenue hoping to sell them “Quinamino”. The label signed her as an artist instead, and the song became her breakthrough in January 2020.
Her debut album African Music (2021) won Outstanding Album at the Janzi Awards, where she was also named Female Artist of the Year. That same year she became the first female Ugandan act on billboards in New York’s Times Square and Los Angeles. Sankofa followed in 2023, with “Masavu” among her more recent singles.
