Biography
Joeboy is Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus, a Nigerian singer and songwriter born on 21 May 1997. He started as a rapper, but a 2017 cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” caught Mr Eazi’s attention, and he was brought into the emPawa Africa programme.
“Baby” (March 2019), written and recorded in about 45 minutes, went viral on the back of a low-budget visualiser. “Beginning” repeated the trick that August, and both anchored his debut EP Love & Light. He won Best Artiste in African Pop at the 2019 AFRIMA awards, and in February 2020 he joined Kuami Eugene on the remix of CKay’s “Love Nwantiti”.
His debut album Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic came out in February 2021, followed by Body & Soul (2023), with “Sip (Alcohol)”. In 2024 he launched his own label, Young Legend, in partnership with Warner Music Africa, and he has since released Viva Lavida (2025) and Agaba Romantic (2026).
