How Burna Boy and His Mother are Revolutionizing African Cinema with an Unprecedented Project

Spaceship Films, co-founded by Nigerian musician Burna Boy and his mother, Bose Ogulu, is one of the international companies managing new content production for Black Mic Mac. This Paris-based studio is dedicated to funding African film and TV projects.

The upcoming crime thriller *3 Cold Dishes*, directed by Asurf Oluseyi, is being heralded as “the biggest pan-African film yet” and “an African cinematic journey like no other.” This multi-platform project will encompass a TV series, music video, original soundtrack album, documentary, and digital collectibles.

*3 Cold Dishes*, filmed across Nigeria, Benin, Ivory Coast, and Mauritania, will be presented in French, Yoruba, and English. The film is co-produced by Asurf Films, Martian Network, and Ifind Pictures, with a global trailer release scheduled for September. The cast includes Osas Ighodaro, Femi Jacobs, Wale Ojo, Ruby Akubueze, and Brutus Richard. The storyline follows three former sex trafficking victims seeking revenge, delving into the forced prostitution of young girls and the political themes surrounding this issue.

According to the film’s official website, “What makes this film unique is the diversity of the kidnappers’ profiles, adding depth and complexity to the storyline. As the three women confront their captors, they ask a variety of questions, revealing how they’ve experienced their trauma differently. Through a multitude of profiles and examples, the film sheds light on the issue from various perspectives, offering a powerful and emotional journey that is sure to leave a lasting impact on audiences.”

Exstimated Funds Received From The Project Burna Boy Is To Join

The project has already received approximately $100,000 in grants from the Francophonie Image Fund and the Red Sea Fund.

In addition to his role as an executive producer, Burna Boy, who is nominated for several awards at this year’s BET Awards on June 30, will contribute to the film’s soundtrack. Other African pop stars, including Aṣa, Tems, Ayra Starr, Johnny Drille, and Grammy winner Angélique Kidjo, will also be featured on the soundtrack.

Earlier this month, Nigerian pop star Tiwa Savage released her debut feature film *Water and Garri* on Amazon Prime Video, along with a soundtrack album featuring Aṣa and Ayra Starr.

In April, it was reported that Ghanaian rapper and filmmaker Blitz Bazawule, known for his work on Beyoncé’s *Black Is King* and 2023’s musical adaptation of *The Color Purple*, would direct Warner Bros’ *Black Samurai* movie.
