In Lagos, Nigeria, nearly 400 residents received free health screenings, treatment, and enrollment into the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) health insurance scheme during a two-day medical outreach organized by General Hospital, Somolu, and its partners. The event, which took place at the General Hospital, Somolu, offered a range of services, including screenings for hypertension, diabetes, malaria, cholesterol, and prostate cancer, as well as mental health counseling.
Free Healthcare Services in Somolu
Residents of Somolu, Lagos, turned out in large numbers to receive free medical services, including health screenings, treatment, and enrollment into the LASHMA health insurance scheme. The outreach, which was first held at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, later moved to General Hospital, Somolu, where residents received different medical services without paying a kobo. The beneficiaries were screened for common health conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, malaria, and prostate cancer.
Enrolling Residents into LASHMA
Another major part of the outreach was helping eligible residents enroll in the LASHMA health insurance scheme. This opportunity allowed residents to access healthcare beyond the outreach, providing them with a safety net for future medical expenses. Healthcare personnel assisted eligible residents with their registration into the LASHMA insurance scheme, ensuring that they had access to quality healthcare.
Advice from Medical Experts
Speaking during the event, Deputy Medical Director Nathaniel Oja advised beneficiaries not to see the outreach as a replacement for proper medical care. According to him, patients diagnosed with conditions requiring further treatment should return to the hospital for follow-up care. Oja also assured residents that the hospital would continue to provide additional treatment within the capacity of the facility.
Encouraging Beneficiaries to Make the Most of the Opportunity
Lead partner Adebayo Akintobi of the Global Health Charity and Training Foundation encouraged beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity by speaking openly with doctors about any health concerns. He urged residents not to leave without fully understanding the outcome of their medical tests or asking questions where necessary. Akintobi also expressed hope that the partnership with General Hospital, Somolu, would continue as part of efforts to improve access to quality healthcare across Lagos.
Access to Quality Healthcare without Cost
For many of the residents who attended, the programme offered something increasingly difficult to find in today's economy – access to quality healthcare without worrying about the cost. The initiative was carried out through a partnership involving the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), Global Health Charity and Training Foundation, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, DBA Comprehensive Health Charity, and Capacity Health Foundation. The programme highlighted the importance of prevention in healthcare, with medical experts emphasizing the need for regular screening to prevent life-threatening complications.
The free medical outreach in Somolu, Lagos, is a testament to the efforts of healthcare providers and organizations to make quality healthcare accessible to all, regardless of income. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like this one will remain crucial in addressing the needs of residents in Lagos and beyond.
