Spotify announce new ways to identify AI personas making music

Spotify Unveils Groundbreaking Tool to Expose AI Music Creators

Spotify, the world's largest music streaming platform, has announced a new system designed to identify artist profiles that use AI-generated, human-like identities. The new "AI Personas" label will help listeners distinguish between profiles representing real people and those presenting an AI-generated identity.

The move comes as AI-generated music and virtual artist identities become increasingly common across streaming platforms. With AI increasingly blurring the boundaries between human performers, virtual characters, and algorithmically generated identities, Spotify's new system represents an attempt to give listeners more information about who or what is behind the music they discover on the platform.

New Label to Identify AI-Generated Artist Profiles

The new "AI Personas" label will be displayed on artist profiles, banners, and About sections, as well as in Search and on track rows within playlists. Artists whose profiles are labelled by Spotify will be notified and given the opportunity to either confirm the classification through self-disclosure or appeal the decision. This means an artist can use AI as part of their creative process without necessarily being classified as an AI Persona.

Starting August 11, artists can voluntarily disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona. However, Spotify says it will not rely solely on artists to identify themselves. The company will combine human review with AI investigative tools to identify profiles that may qualify for the label.

Changes to Personalised Recommendations

One of the biggest changes is how Spotify will handle recommendations. Music from artists identified as AI Personas will be excluded from personalised recommendations by default, giving users greater control over whether they encounter this type of content. This move aims to provide listeners with more information about the artists they listen to and give them the option to avoid AI-generated content if they choose to do so.

Spotify's decision to introduce this new system comes as the music industry grapples with the implications of AI-generated music. While some artists see AI as a creative tool, others worry that it could lead to the homogenization of sound and the erasure of human identity in music.

A Step Towards Transparency

The introduction of the "AI Personas" label is seen as a step towards greater transparency in the music industry. By providing listeners with more information about the artists they listen to, Spotify aims to address concerns around artist authenticity and whether listeners should know when they are engaging with an artificial rather than human performer.

However, the move has also raised questions about the potential impact on the music industry. Will the introduction of AI-generated music lead to a new era of creativity and innovation, or will it result in the homogenization of sound and the erasure of human identity in music? Only time will tell.

The new system is expected to begin appearing on the Spotify app from mid-September. As the music industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how this new development shapes the way we listen to and interact with music.
