Biography
AKA, born Kiernan Jarryd Forbes in Cape Town on 28 January 1988 and raised in Johannesburg, was a South African rapper, producer and businessman who also went by Supamega. He started out in 2002 with the hip-hop group Entity, then studied sound engineering and co-founded the production team The I.V League.
“Victory Lap” made his name, and his debut album Altar Ego (2011) went gold and earned him Best Male Artist at the 2012 South African Music Awards. Levels (2014) went double platinum and made him the first South African rapper to reach platinum with an album recorded mainly in English. He followed it with Be Careful What You Wish For (2017), a joint album with Anatii, and Touch My Blood (2018), home to “Fela in Versace” with Kiddominant.
AKA was shot dead outside a restaurant in Durban on 10 February 2023. His final album, Mass Country, came out two weeks later. He remains the best-selling hip-hop artist South Africa has produced.
