Biography
Amaarae is Ama Serwah Genfi, a Ghanaian-American singer and songwriter born in the Bronx on 4 July 1994 and raised between Atlanta, New Jersey and Accra. She mixes pop, R&B, Afrobeats and alté, sings in a soft, high register that nobody else in the scene sounds like, and treats gender and sexuality with a looseness that set her apart early.
After studying English literature at Agnes Scott College she moved back to Ghana and released the Passionfruit Summers EP in 2017. Her debut album The Angel You Don’t Know (2020) was named Best New Music by Pitchfork. The following year its song “Sad Girlz Luv Money”, with Moliy, went global on TikTok and was remixed with Kali Uchis.
Fountain Baby followed in June 2023 through Interscope, alongside a set that made her the first Ghanaian on NPR’s Tiny Desk. In April 2025 she became the first Ghanaian artist to play a solo set at Coachella, and in August 2025 she released her third album, Black Star.
