Biography
Ami Faku, born Amanda Faku on 28 May 1993, is a South African singer and songwriter from the township of eZinyoka in Port Elizabeth. She grew up singing in the house church her father pastored and was recording music by 2012.
A run on The Voice SA in 2017 did not end in a win, but it got her signed to The Vth Season. Her collaboration with Sun-El Musician, “Into Ingawe”, went triple platinum. Her debut album Imali (2019) opened at number one in South Africa and went gold, and in 2020 Deezer named her the most-streamed female artist in the country. The EA Wave Reimagines EP followed later that year.
Her voice has since become a regular fixture on amapiano records. She sings on Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa’s “Abalele” and “Asibe Happy”, and “Fatela” with Aymos (2022) went platinum. Her sound leans towards soul and R&B, sung mostly in isiXhosa.
