Biography
DJ Maphorisa is Themba Sekowe, a South African DJ, producer, singer and songwriter born on 15 November 1987 and raised in Soshanguve, Pretoria. He is of Tsonga and Lobedu heritage, and “Maphorisa” means “the police” in Tsonga. His brother is the producer Myztro.
He first made his name behind the desk. Uhuru’s “Y-Tjukuta”, Kwesta’s “Ngud'” and Busiswa’s “Lahla” were early hits, and his credits grew to include Wizkid, Drake, Major Lazer, Black Coffee and Runtown. After time at Kalawa Jazmee he set up his own label, BlaqBoy Music.
With Kabza De Small he formed the Scorpion Kings, the duo behind “Abalele” and “Asibe Happy” with Ami Faku and Rumble in the Jungle (2021) with Tresor. He also played on “Banyana” and 2023’s “Mnike”. He opened for Wizkid on the Made in Lagos tour and was named African DJ of the Year at the Soundcity MVP Awards. His 2025 releases include Ngomoya, Rough Dance and Kings Will Rise.
