Biography
Tyla is Tyla Laura Seethal, a South African singer and songwriter born in Edenvale, Gauteng, on 30 January 2002 and raised in Johannesburg. She started posting songs and covers on Instagram in her last year at Edenglen High School. After a year off from a mining engineering degree to try music, she never went back.
Her self-released debut “Getting Late” (2019) was a hit at home, and she signed with Epic Records in 2021. “Water” (July 2023) set off a global dance challenge and reached the top ten in South Africa, the UK and the US. She was the first South African solo artist on the Billboard Hot 100 since Hugh Masekela in 1968, and the song won the first-ever Grammy for Best African Music Performance. Her mix of pop, R&B and amapiano has earned her the nickname “Queen of Popiano”.
Her self-titled debut album came out in March 2024, followed by the WWP EP (2025) and her second album A*Pop (2026), home to “Chanel”. She is the youngest African artist to win a Grammy and has two, along with MTV VMAs, BET Awards and MTV EMAs.
