Shatta Wale is Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., a Ghanaian dancehall artist born in Accra on 17 October 1984 and raised around Korle Gonno. He first recorded as Bandana, with “Bandana from Ghana” and “Moko Hoo” around 2004, then went quiet for several years.
He came back as Shatta Wale in 2013. That year he aimed a song of insults at the Ghana Music Awards, and it was his breakthrough. “Dancehall King” won him Artiste of the Year at the 2014 Ghana Music Awards, and “My Level”, “Taking Over”, “Dancehall Commando” with Sarkodie and “Wine Ya Waist” with Davido kept him at the top. His fans, the Shatta Movement, are among the most devoted in Ghanaian music. In 2019 he won 11 prizes in one night at the 3Music Awards and appeared on Beyoncé’s “Already” from The Lion King: The Gift.
His albums include After the Storm (2016), Wonder Boy (2019), Konekt and SAFA (2024), Voice of the Crown (2025) and African King (2026). He performed at Vybz Kartel’s Freedom Street concert in Jamaica in 2024, and in October 2025 he filled Black Star Square for his own birthday show. He has also acted in several films and runs businesses beyond music.
