Biography
Sho Madjozi is Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegerif, a South African rapper, singer, songwriter and poet born on 9 May 1992 in Shirley Village, Elim, Limpopo. She spent part of her youth in Dar es Salaam, then studied creative writing and African studies at Mount Holyoke College in the US, where she wrote poetry as MayaThePoet. She raps mostly in Xitsonga and wears traditional Tsonga dress.
Features with Okmalumkoolkat and the single “Gqi” got her noticed, and her first solo single, “Dumi HiPhone”, came out in 2017. That year she also acted in the telenovela Isithembiso. Her debut album Limpopo Champions League (2018), with “Huku”, won Newcomer of the Year and Best Female Album at the 2019 South African Music Awards.
In June 2019 she won Best New International Act at the BET Awards. Her COLORS performance of “John Cena” went viral, and the wrestler himself responded. Forbes Africa put her on its 30 Under 30 list that year. Her second album, What a Life, followed in 2020.
