Biography
Zuchu is Zuhura Othman Soud, a Tanzanian singer and songwriter from Zanzibar, born on 22 November 1993. Her mother is the taarab star Khadija Kopa, and her father wrote songs for Kopa and the TOT Band. She auditioned for the Tecno Own the Stage competition in 2015 alongside Nandy.
Through her mother she got an audition with Diamond Platnumz, and one of the songs she sang, “Wana”, became her debut single after WCB Wasafi signed her. The I Am Zuchu EP (April 2020) included “Mauzauza” with her mother. She broke YouTube records for East African women, reaching 100,000 subscribers within a week and a million within eleven months, and AFRIMMA named her Emerging Artist that year.
“Sukari” (2021) was one of the biggest Tanzanian songs of the decade. In 2022 she became the first female artist from East Africa nominated at the MTV EMAs, and in 2023 she won five Tanzania Music Awards. Her debut album, Peace and Money, came out in December 2024. Her sound mixes Bongo Flava with the taarab she grew up on.
