AK Songstress

AK Songstress is back. The Ghanaian dancehall singer released “Snatchers Association” on Friday 6 November, her first single as lead artist in nearly three years, ending a long quiet spell for one of the few women to make a name in the country’s dancehall scene.

The song went up on her YouTube channel that morning, alongside an official lyric video, and it is now on all the major streaming platforms. Her last lead single, “Woman Management”, came out in January 2024.

Who is AK Songstress?

AK Songstress is Akosua Kwakye, a reggae and dancehall singer who was already performing at secondary school. She signed to Paradise Entertainment and broke through in the mid-2010s.

In 2014 she became the first woman to win Discovery of the Year for Dancehall/Reggae Artiste at the BASS Awards, and a year later she was named Best Female Musician (Ghana) at Nigeria’s City People Entertainment Awards.

“Jonathan” and the songs that followed

Her biggest record is “Jonathan”, released in 2021. Its video has passed 8.6 million views on YouTube, and the song travelled far beyond Ghana. It also brought trouble: a month after its release she told Peace FM she had been facing spiritual attacks since it took off.

More hits followed. “Move On” is close to 2.5 million views and “My Proposal” more than 2.2 million, and “Someone’s Boyfriend” (2022) and “Woman Trailer” (2023) stayed with the relationship stories her fans know her for.

Big names on her records

Her catalogue reads like a who’s who of Ghanaian music. Sarkodie joins her on “Ware Me”, Kuami Eugene on “Give Dem”, Efya on “Wonua”, Medikal on “Nkomo” and Edem on “Gbee Body”. She has also lent her voice to Eno Barony’s “My Dear” and, in February 2025, Abochi’s “Wedding Day”.

In 2023 and 2024 her music was gathered into the EPs Ascension and King of the Queens, the compilation History and Timeless (The Reggae Album), a reminder that her roots run as deep in reggae as in dancehall.

Why “Snatchers Association” matters

For fans who have waited since 2024, the new single is a statement that AK Songstress is still in the game. It is her first release of 2026.
