From Highlife to Drill: How Agye Din Is Building a Record of Ghana’s Musicians

The Agye Din homepage, Ghana's personality database

More than 100 profiles on Agye Din describe their subject as a rapper. That is over a third of the 288 people in the site’s Musician category, and a sign of how far rap has come in a country where, for most of the last century, highlife was the sound that defined Ghanaian music.

Agye Din is an online database of Ghanaian public figures founded by the blogger and media strategist King Bygone. It holds more than 2,434 profiles across 22 categories, and its music section has grown quickly through 2026.

The rap generation

In September 2026 the site added 42 Ghanaian rappers in a single batch, filling gaps that had left many working artists without any reliable biography online. They joined established names such as Sarkodie, E.L, Kweku Smoke and Black Sherif, whose rise from Konongo Zongo to international stages is set out on his profile.

Each rapper’s page follows the same structure as every other profile on the site: real name and stage name, date and place of birth, home region, schools, career, label history and awards. Where a rapper has an official YouTube channel or verified social accounts, those links sit on the profile so readers can go straight to the music.

The interest is there. On 30 October 2026, Omar Sterling, one half of R2Bees, was among the five most searched names on the whole site, alongside politicians and business figures.

The highlife record

The database also looks back. More than 40 profiles describe their subject as a highlife musician, and the site’s feature on highlife legends Ghana has lost since 2018 brings together the careers of the stars the genre has said goodbye to in recent years.

Living greats are covered too. Amakye Dede and Kojo Antwi both have full profiles, and their pages list the albums, collaborations and awards that built their reputations over several decades. For younger listeners who know the songs but not the story behind them, these pages are a useful starting point.

Awards behind the names

Agye Din tracks 2,148 awards across its profiles, and musicians dominate the top of the table. Sarkodie leads every Ghanaian in the database with 120 listed awards. Stonebwoy has 101 and Shatta Wale 100, while Black Sherif has collected 27 in a career that only took off in 2021.

Five people in the database have won a BET Award, and three of them are Ghanaian musicians: Sarkodie, Stonebwoy and Black Sherif. The Awards Database can be searched by artist and by award scheme, which makes it easy to check claims that tend to get exaggerated in fan arguments online.

How artists can fix their pages

Profiles are built from public sources: official statements, verified social accounts, reputable news outlets and the Wikipedia and Wikidata records where they exist. Sources are numbered at the foot of each page. Every profile also carries a Suggest a Correction link, and the editorial team commits to reviewing each request within five business days.

That matters for musicians, whose birth years, real names and label deals are often reported wrongly and then copied from blog to blog. Artists and their managers can use the correction link to fix the record. For the 100-plus rappers now on the site, many of whom had no proper biography anywhere before, it is the first time their story has been written down in one place.
