Okese1 - GEN Z TRAP cover art

Okese1 released “GEN Z TRAP” on 30 October 2026, a self-released single of 3 minutes and 8 seconds, produced by Sickbeatz and written by Afrane Frank, the rapper’s real name. It is the latest in a stream of singles from the Kumasi-raised trap artist, and it arrived just as “Gen Z” became the word of the season in Ghanaian music.

Everybody wants Gen Z

Okese1 is not alone in reaching for the label. Apple Music lists “GEN Z II”, a single by Fameye, Joey B and Sarkodie featuring AratheJay, for release on 12 November. When three established names and a younger star all put the same two words in a title within a fortnight of each other, it says something about who the industry is chasing: the listeners born after the late 1990s who stream, share and make TikTok trends.

Okese1 is on the edge of that generation himself. Okese1 was born on 21 February 1997, which puts him right at the start of Gen Z by most definitions. He grew up with family roots in Bonwire in the Ejisu-Juaben district, went to Anglican Senior High School in Kumasi, and then studied at the University of Cape Coast.

Okese1 “GEN Z TRAP” credits

The auto-generated YouTube credits list Okese1 on rap and Sickbeatz as producer, with Afrane Frank named as composer, lyricist and songwriter. The copyright line reads “℗ 2026 Okese1”, and the track was distributed through TuneCore. There is no label on it. It is a fully independent release.

A YouTube breakdown channel posted a full analysis within two days, calling it a Christmas banger. Whether it becomes one depends on the next six weeks, but the date makes sense: a late-October release has time to settle into December parties.

Six years since “Yie Yie”

Okese1 broke through in 2020 with “Yie Yie”, a song that went viral in Kumasi, spread across Ghana and topped Boomplay’s Top 100. “Hustle” with Medikal, “Amount”, “Na Today” and “Woso” followed that same year, and “Momo”, “Trapper” and “The Goat” kept the run going in 2021. He founded the Amotia Geng crew and is part of Criss Waddle’s Arab Money Gang.

His projects are the Pressure EP (2023), I Never Left (2025) and The Hardest (February 2026). Between them he has kept up a steady flow of singles, including “Mhmm” in January 2026 and the performance video for “Don’t Come Too Close” in 2025.

Where to listen

“GEN Z TRAP” is on Apple Music and the other major stores through TuneCore, and the official audio is on YouTube through the Okese1 Topic channel. His own channel, OKESE1MUSIC, carries the videos.

Play “Yie Yie” first and “GEN Z TRAP” second. The first was a Kumasi street hit by a 23-year-old. The second is a 29-year-old trying to speak to the generation that came up after him.
