Kelvyn Boy has been around long enough that it is easy to take him for granted. He has spent close to a decade in Ghanaian music, left one of the country’s best-known labels, started his own, and kept releasing through all of it. His new album, 2nd Step, came out on 25 September 2026 with one of the biggest guest lists of the year. Here is his story so far.
Assin Fosu
Kelvyn Boy was born Kelvin Brown on 1 April 1991 in Assin Fosu, in the Central Region, to Solomon Yeboah and Adwoa Safoa. He lost his mother when he was young. He still went on to complete his education at Osei Tutu Senior High School in Akropong, near Kumasi.
The Burniton years
His first big platform was Stonebwoy’s Burniton Music Group. In 2017 he released “Toffee” with Medikal and “Na You” with Stonebwoy, and his name started to travel.
The partnership did not last. Kelvyn Boy left Burniton in 2019 amid some controversy. Many artists lose momentum after an exit like that. He kept going.
Going independent
2019 turned out to be a busy year. He released “Mea”, then “Yawa No Dey” with M.anifest, and the T.I.M.E EP. “Momo”, with Darkovibes and Mugeez, and 2020’s “Killa Killa” kept him in rotation.
That November he released Blackstar, a 15-track album, on his own label, Blakk Arm Entertainment. Billboard interviewed him around that time, under the headline “Kelvyn Boy On His Aim To Bring ‘Ghana to the Grammys’.” The ambition was clear even if the label was small.
For the Kulture
Then he went quiet. Three years passed before his next project, For the Kulture, a seven-track EP released in August 2023, again through Blakk Arm.
The features showed he still had pull. Tekno is on “Softly”, King Promise on “Getting Better”, and Babyboy AV on “Roma”. The EP also included a remix of his song “Down Flat” with Tekno and the British rapper Stefflon Don. Afrocritik gave it 7 out of 10, and its reviewer, Emmanuel Daraloye, wrote: “The three years hiatus paid off, if anyone is still in doubt, a spin through this EP is highly advised.”
2nd Step
The build-up to 2nd Step ran through 2026. “Backa” came out in June, “2AM II” with MFg Thugga in July, and “Pioneer” on 18 September, a week before the album. Of those three, only “Pioneer” made the final tracklist, alongside the earlier single “Weather For 2” with KOJO BLAK.
The album itself is 12 tracks, just over 35 minutes, released through Blakk Arm under exclusive licence to Ziiki Media. It opens with “Jehova” and ends with “Hallelujah”, and its guest list is a guide to modern Ghanaian music: Medikal on “Allo”, Lalid and Strongman on “I”, Cina Soul on “Millions”, Kuami Eugene on “All Over”, KOJO BLAK on “Weather For 2” and Mellisa on “Sorry”.
The Medikal feature closes a loop. The two were on “Toffee” together in 2017, when Kelvyn Boy was just starting out. Nine years later, Medikal is a guest on an album released on Kelvyn Boy’s own label.
Across the album he moves between Afrobeats, Afropop, hiplife, R&B and hip-hop, and one write-up described it as a look back at how far he has come after almost a decade in the industry.
