No guests needed: the African albums that go it alone

Music · By Afro Yard · · 4 min read

In Afrobeats and African rap, the guest list often sells the album before anyone presses play. A big name on the tracklist means headlines, playlist placements and a new audience. So when an artist releases a full project with no guests at all, it stands out.

September 2026 brought one of the clearest examples in a while. Young Jonn’s Dear London has seven songs and not one feature. It is not the only one. Over the past two years, several artists have released projects with few guests or none at all. Here are the records that went it alone, or close to it, and what they tell us.

Young Jonn: from nine guests to none

The contrast here is sharp. Young Jonn’s previous album, Blue Disco, came out in November 2025 with 21 tracks and a guest list that included Wizkid, Olamide, Asake, Rema, Focalistic, Shenseea and DJ Tunez. It debuted at number one on the Apple Music Nigeria albums chart.

Ten months later, Dear London runs just over 18 minutes and has only him on it. For an artist who spent the 2010s producing hits for other people, making a record that is entirely his own voice looks like a deliberate choice.

Kweku Smoke: two albums with no features

Kweku Smoke went further, and earlier. When he started releasing on his own label, Scatter Der, in 2024, his first two albums had no guests at all.

Kweku Jesus, released in March 2024, had ten solo tracks and still went to number one on iTunes in Ghana. Born in Hell, released that September, was another ten tracks with no features, and Charts Africa rated it 8 out of 10.

That was a big change from where he started. His 2020 album Snoop Forever featured ten different guests, from Sarkodie to Efya. His new album, NO DAYS OFF, sits in the middle: 13 tracks and just three features, from Dikoo, Kwesi Arthur and Lasmid.

Seyi Vibez: solo EPs and a one-guest album

Seyi Vibez has done it too. Loseyi Professor came out in July 2024 as a surprise, with no singles beforehand and no features across its seven tracks.

His new album, SWAGUU, has 14 tracks and one guest, Quavo, who appears on a 78-second title track at the very end. That is a sharp turn from FUJI MOTO, his previous album, which brought in French Montana, NLE Choppa, Trippie Redd and Olamide.

The modern benchmark: Fireboy DML

Any conversation about solo African albums leads back to Fireboy DML’s debut, Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps. Released by YBNL Nation on 29 November 2019, it had 13 tracks and no guest artists, and it was mostly produced by Pheelz and Cracker Mallo.

It still passed six million Spotify streams in its first three days. “Jealous” became an international hit, and “Vibration” went on to be one of the most-streamed songs in Nigeria in 2020. It showed that a new artist could introduce himself without borrowing anyone else’s audience.

Why go solo?

No artist here has given a single public explanation, so this part is our reading, not theirs. But the pattern suggests a few reasons.

Identity. Features can blur a project’s sound. For an artist trying to define who they are, as Fireboy DML was in 2019, or redefine it, as Young Jonn is now, a solo record keeps the message clear.

Confidence. Kweku Smoke’s solo albums came after he set up his own label. Young Jonn’s solo EP came after a number-one album. Going it alone tends to follow a moment when an artist has already proved they can draw a crowd.

Control. Features involve schedules, contracts and other teams. Loseyi Professor arrived as a surprise with no singles, which is much easier to pull off when nobody else needs to sign off.

The other side

None of this means features are going away. The same month that brought Dear London also brought Kelvyn Boy’s 2nd Step, with seven guests, and Essumann’s Ghetto Therapy P.T. II, with six. For a rising artist, a strong guest list can still open doors.

The two approaches do different jobs. Features grow an audience. Solo records show that the audience is already there. The artists above have all reached the point where they can choose.
